And around the gardens’ open spaces stood in close rows
In the fields around Riyadh they were arrayed
Matching, similar forms, their garments green.
In ranks, their robes all green of a single shade
تلاقتْmet أعاليهاtheir tops وأشَّتْand intertwined densely أصولُهاtheir bases
فقدfor indeed عجزتْwere unable عنto خَرْقِهاpiercing them الريحُthe wind والقَطْرُand the rain
Their tops met, and their bases intertwined densely,
Their tops were joined, their roots spread firm below
For wind and rain were unable to pierce them.
Resisting wind and rain in their stronghold
وقدand indeed قُرِضَتْwere clipped منهاfrom them جِعادُcurls لِمَامهاtheir locks
وقامتْand stood صفوفاًin rows مثلماjust as قُوِّمَwas set straight السَّطْرُthe written line
And the curls of their locks had been clipped away,
Trimmed from them were the locks of their turbaned crowns
And they stood in rows, like a line of writing set straight.
And they stood in lines as straight as lines of prose
