By your life, there is no hope of my recovery, while love

creeps between my body and my bones.

I revere you too much to complain to you, and I brood

over my anguish; love is strange indeed.

    وكيف بداءٍ لا يراهُ طبيبُ

    And I hope for healing from a burning grief that has pervaded my vitals;

yet how, with an illness no physician sees?

Your share of my heart is as you already know,

and, praise be to God, I have no share of you.

And I claim only to be content with a glance

at you; lovers’ claims take many forms.

And I did not divulge the secret that was between us,

but a lover’s glance arouses suspicion.

And on a night of union, I had the chance, but was held back

by my modesty—mark this: modesty is indeed a watchman.
