وبمهجتيand with my life's blood as ransom مَنْthe one لاnot أريدُI desire لمهجتِيfor my soul
طِيْبَsweetness الحياةِlife وَروْحَهَاand its solace منfrom بَعْدِهِafter him
And my life's blood for him—I do not wish for my soul
With my being I wish not for one my being denies
Life's sweetness or its solace after he is gone.
The sweetness of life and its spirit after him
وردَarrived النَّعِيُّthe news of death وكنتُand I was آمُلhoping أنْto أرَىsee
وَجْهَthe face المبشِّرِthe bearer of glad tidings مقبِلاًapproaching منfrom عندِهِhis presence
News of death arrived while I was hoping to see
News of demise arrived while I hoped to see
The face of the bearer of glad tidings approaching from him.
The face of the herald returning from his side
لمdid not يكفنيsuffice for me أنthat عِشْتُI lived بعدَafter فِراقهِparting from him
حتىuntil ابتُلِيتُI was afflicted منthrough الشَّقاءِmisfortune بفَقْدِهِwith his loss
It was not enough that I lived on after parting from him;
It sufficed me not that after his leaving I lived
I was further afflicted, through misfortune, with his loss.
Until with misery from losing him I was tried
فَلْتُظهرِso let ... reveal الأيامُthe days أقصىthe utmost كيدِهَاtheir guile
وليبْلُغِand let ... reach المقدارُfate غايةَthe limit جُهْدِهِof its exertion
So let the days reveal their utmost guile,
So let the days reveal their utmost schemes
And let fate exert itself to the utmost.
And let the ordained reach the end of its stride
لمdid not يبقَremain ليfor me شيءٌanything أُسَرُّI am gladdened بقربِهby its nearness
منfrom بعدِafter يومِكَyour day of death أوor أُسَاءُI am saddened لبُعْدِهِby its distance
Nothing remains for me whose nearness gladdens me,
Naught is left that gladdens me by its nearness
Since the day of your death, or whose distance grieves me.
After your day or saddens me by its divide
