May slumber be sweet to you, sleeper through the night; for I
have grown used to sleeplessness that pleases and delights me.

I drove sleep’s grazing herds away from me, yearning
for a flicker of Yemeni lightning at al-ʿUdhayb.

And how much I am owed by lightning gleaming from the preserve’s right—
a careworn, slow-paying debtor—if he wished, he would pay me my due.

And another, his waistcloth drenched by a shower
of copious tears, relentless in their streaming.

And a woman, slender as a braided rein, in whose palm
lie the reins of my heart in love, and my own.
إِذاwhen سمتُI bid قلبيmy heart الغيَّwaywardness فيهاconcerning her أطاعنيit obeys me
وإنْand if سمتهُI bid it فيهاconcerning her الرشادَright guidance عَصانيit defies me
When I bid my heart go astray over her, it obeys me;
but if I bid it follow the right course concerning her, it defies me.
ضمِنتُI pledged لصحبيto my companions الصبرpatience عنهاwithout her وقدyet indeed أبتْrefused
ضمانةُthe sickness of قلبيmy heart أنthat أفيI remain faithful بضمانيto my pledge
I promised my companions patience without her, yet
my heart’s sickness would not let me keep my pledge.

So, my two companions in private and in public, help me;
for nothing remains of me except what you see.
خذاyou two, take خبريnews of me عنfrom نارthe fire of قلبيَmy heart واسْألاand you two, ask

Learn my story from my heart’s fire, and ask
my tear-duct’s trickling about my changing state.

If you two say—and the truth is as you see it—
“Heal yourself with patience,” then go and leave me.

إِذاwhen لمnot يكُنْthere is ليfor me بالسُّلُوِّfor forgetting love يدانِtwo hands (strength)
It is sincere counsel, but it is of no use
when I have no strength to forget my love.
