    Indeed, a people I parted from have gained power,

    and between me and them lies enmity.

    I loathed their kindness and feared their harm,

    and with fear there is no pleasure in staying.

    فإِذا أحسنوا إِليَّ أساءُوا

    From them comes a heavy shackle around people's necks;

    so when they show me kindness, they do me harm.

    What place has a man of honor in a land of humiliation,

    ruled by hostile people?

    There is nothing but departure, pale camels, and the camel-driver,

    and the cover of darkness, and the desert.
