O my two companions, help me against a beloved

who, when I complain to him, worsens my sickness.

A guileless gazelle—when I try to catch him unawares,

I loose my gaze as an arrow, and it returns as a target.

What have I to do with lightning passing over Iḍam,

coursing through the night and milking my eyelids with every flash?

Lightning gleams in Najd—the sanctuary is my homeland—

carrying off my mind and heart whenever it appears.

Who will tell the tribe, whose home is far away, and who are content

with their neighbor as a neighbor, while I accept no substitute for them?

My heart has not weaned itself from you, though before you it was weaned

from suckling; it has ended, and youth has passed.

Indeed, the time whose cheerfulness once was

a delight to heart and eye has departed and come to an end.

    وإِن ذكَرتُ فِعْرقٌ ساكِتٌ نَبَضَا

    So if I despair, it is despair that has left no hope;

and if I remember, a dormant vein begins to pulse.

I made one who does not treat me justly the arbiter of my soul,

yet I attain no aim by making him my judge.

Both are the same to me, now that my fate is in his hand:

whether he judges me unjustly or puts an end to me.

How long shall I rouse my fortune, while it stumbles with me?

I fear that Fortune, if it rises, will not see me.
