and virtue's ornament adorned me when I was unadorned.

    والشمسُ رأْدَ الضُحَى كالشمسِ في الطَفَلِ

    My later glory and my earlier glory are alike;

and the sun in early forenoon is like the sun at dusk.

Why remain in al-Zawra? I have no dwelling

there, no she-camel there, and no male camel.

    Far from family, empty-handed, alone,

like a sword whose two sides are stripped of their coverings.

So there is no friend to whom I may complain of my sorrow,

nor an intimate to whom my joy can turn.

with mere return after toil, instead of spoils.

one like himself, neither timid nor dependent on others,

sweet in jest, bitter in earnest: there is mingled

in him the tenderness of love poetry with the harshness of battle.

I drove the flock of slumber from the watering place of his eye,

while night enticed sleep's grazing herds to the eyes.

And the riders leaned over their camel saddles—one ecstatic

yet sober, another drunk on the wine of love.

So I said: I call on you for the great ordeal, that you may help me,

yet you abandon me in the momentous event.

My eye sleeps while the star's eye keeps watch,

and shifts, though the dye of night has not changed.

Will you help with a folly I have resolved upon?

And folly sometimes wards off failure.

whose braids are black, whose ornaments and robes are red.

So lead us under night's protection, guided

by a waft of perfume that leads us to the encampments.

their blade-points steeped in the waters of coquetry and kohl.

by the noble women's timidity and stinginess.

while honor lies in the swift trot of docile she-camels.

So drive them, rushing, into the breasts of the deserts,

rivaling doubled horse-reins with their braided halters.

High aspiration told me—and it spoke truly

in what it said—that honor lies in moving from place to place.

the sun would never leave Aries' circle for a single day.

I called to Fortune—if only I had called to one who listened!

But Fortune is too busy with fools to attend to me.

Perhaps, if my merit and their shortcomings appeared

before its eye, it would sleep unheeding of them, or awaken for me.

    ما أضيقَ العيشَ لولا فسحةُ الأمَلِ

    I comfort my soul with hopes that I await;

how cramped life would be without the spaciousness of hope!

    فكيف أرضَى وقد ولَّتْ على عَجَلِ

    I did not accept life when the days were approaching;

so how can I accept it now they have hurried away?

Knowing my soul's worth made me prize it highly,

so I guarded it from whatever is cheap and debased.

And if someone beneath me rises above me, it is no wonder:

I have consolation in the sun's lying below Saturn.

the turns of time contain enough to make schemes needless.

so beware of people, and keep their company with mistrust.

he who relies on no man in this world.

so expect evil and be wary of them.

the gulf of inconsistency between word and deed.

    وهل يُطابَقُ معوَجٌّ بمعتَدِلِ

    Their lies have disfigured your truthfulness in people's eyes;

can a crooked thing be matched with a straight one?

If anything can make them hold fast

to their pledges, it is the sword preceding reproach.

O you who drink the dregs of a life all turbid,

you spent your lifetime in your earliest days.

Why cross the deep sea, riding over it,

when a sip of its scant trickle suffices you?

Contentment's kingdom need not be feared for, nor

does it require supporters or servants.

    فهل سَمِعْتَ بظلٍّ غيرِ منتقلِ

    You hope to remain in a dwelling that has no permanence;

have you heard of a shadow that does not shift?

And you, a knowing man privy to secrets,

be silent: in silence lies safety from error.

    فاربأْ بنفسكَ أن ترعى مع الهَمَلِ

    They have marked you out for a task, if you perceive it;

so hold yourself too high to graze among the untended herd.
