So they did not grasp the nature of our procedure.
They did not recognize our course
فتكليسهمso their calcination غيرdifferent from تكليسناour calcination
فتكليسهم غير تكليسنا
وتطهيرهمand their purification غيرdifferent from تطهيرناour purification
وتطهيرهم غير تطهيرنا
For their calcination differs from ours,
Their calcination is not our calcination
And their purification differs from ours,
Their purification is not our purification
وتصعيدهمand their sublimation غيرdifferent from تصعيدناour sublimation
وتصعيدهم غير تصعيدنا
وتقطيرهمand their distillation غيرdifferent from تقطيرناour distillation
وتقطيرهم غير تقطيرنا
And their sublimation differs from ours,
Their sublimation is not our sublimation
And their distillation differs from ours.
Their distillation is not our distillation
وزئبقهمand their mercury والرصاصand the lead الخبيthe impure (word continues)
وزئبقهم والرصاص الخبي
ثcompletes 'impure' لاnot يصلحانthe two are suitable لاكسيرناfor our elixir
ث لا يصلحان لاكسيرنا
And their mercury and the impure lead
Their mercury and lead acetates
Are both unfit for our elixir.
Are not fit for our elixir
لهمthey have معدنa mineral ولناand we have معدنa mineral
لهم معدن ولنا معدن
يليقbefits بلطفwith the subtlety of تدابيرناour procedures
يليق بلطف تدابيرنا
They have a mineral, and we have a mineral
They have their ore and we have ours
That befits the subtlety of our procedures.
Which suits the subtlety of our operations
ومنand whoever لمdid not يكنbe عارفاًacquainted بالرموwith the symbols (word continues)
ومن لم يكن عارفاً بالرمو
زِcompletes 'symbols' فلاthen let not يهلكنَّhe perish (emphatic) بتعبيرِناby interpreting us
زِ فلا يهلكنَّ بتعبيرِنا
And whoever is not versed in the symbols,
He who is ignorant of the principles
Let him not perish trying to interpret us.
Should not perish through our expressions
وإنand indeed الأولىthose who جهلواthey did not know علمناour science
وإن الأولى جهلوا علمنا
ولمand did not يفطنواthey grasp لتفاسيرِناour explanations (with 'to')
ولم يفطنوا لتفاسيرِنا
And indeed, those who did not know our science
Indeed the ancients were ignorant of our knowledge
And did not grasp our explanations—
And did not understand our interpretations
مقاديرهمtheir quantities وموازينهمand their balances
مقاديرهم وموازينهم
جميعاًall خلافُdifferent from موازينِناour balances
جميعاً خلافُ موازينِنا
Their quantities and their balances
Their measures and scales
All differ from our balances.
Are all contrary to our scales
وليسand there is not عليناupon us ملامblame وقدand indeed
وليس علينا ملام وقد
لقيناهمُwe met them بمعاذيرِناwith our excuses
لقيناهمُ بمعاذيرِنا
And no blame rests upon us, for we have
And we are not to blame, for we
Met them with our excuses.
