تنبَّهَت بيَ طولَ الليلِ ناحِلَةٌ

تنبَّهَت بيَ طولَ الليلِ ناحِلَةٌ

صفراءُ أفنَى قُواهَا الدمعُ والأرقُ

صفراءُ أفنَى قُواهَا الدمعُ والأرقُ

A slender one kept vigil with me all night,

She remained awake throughout the long night, sleepless,

Yellow, her strength drained by tears and sleeplessness.

Her yellow complexion faded, drained by tears and insomnia,

لها من النارِ روحٌ فوقَ مَفْرِقِهَا

لها من النارِ روحٌ فوقَ مَفْرِقِهَا

تدِبُّ فيها ولا يبقَى لها رَمَقُ

تدِبُّ فيها ولا يبقَى لها رَمَقُ

She has a spirit of fire above the crown of her head;

Her soul, ablaze over her temples,

It creeps through her, and no breath of life remains in her.

Creeps through her body leaving her no vigor,

تكابدُ الليلَ تُفْنِيه ويأكُلُها

تكابدُ الليلَ تُفْنِيه ويأكُلُها

والليلُ يضحكُ إذْ تبكِي وتحتَرِقُ

والليلُ يضحكُ إذْ تبكِي وتحتَرِقُ

She struggles through the night, wears it away, and it devours her.

She bears the night, destroying it, though it devours her,

And the night laughs as she weeps and burns.

فقلتُ ما أنتِ مثلي أنتِ في دَعَةٍ

فقلتُ ما أنتِ مثلي أنتِ في دَعَةٍ

طولَ النهارِ ويومي كلُّهُ قَلقُ

طولَ النهارِ ويومي كلُّهُ قَلقُ

So I said, 'You are not like me: you are at ease

So I said, you're not like me, you live in comfort

All day long, while my whole day is unrest.'

At peace all day while my days are filled with worry
