And a vine whose roots lie in the earth,

    far-reaching in origin and stock,

a noble vine, whose branches entwine,

tender, around the nearest, then the next.

Her fill is drawn from the depths of the earth

by her ropes, freely, without her tugging.

When she drinks her fill of her water, she lets fall

from her eyelids a streaming downpour.

And if her lower part is cloaked in dew,

her upper part grows fertile, never barren.

The wind and the falling rain made her conceive,

and the sun in the east and the west.

So she bore her provider offspring, after he

had lived a while with her bearing none.

And she brought them forth, noble offspring tracing their descent

to a father—how noble he is as a father!

And she wrapped them in her green leaves,

    nourished with the sweetest milk.

And the sun lodged them, through the art of

tinting, in ever more wondrous hues.

So it excelled in that art and brought forth

    dazzling things, lovely and wondrous.

    And changed her green clusters

    for coal-black and ash-gray.

And she borrowed water in advance and gave it freely

as wine, like a blazing firebrand.

And she kept on gently, until

her silver was clothed in her golden dye.

Thus the tawny one, born from her offspring,

is the scion of that fertile gray sire.

You see the Pleiades among her clusters,

gleaming in green as dark as night.

Her colors are varied, and her kinds

are alike in stock and lineage.

How much jet is in her, how many onyx beads,

    perfectly rounded, never pierced:

some pitch-black in hue, like the gloom of night,

and some bright, gleaming like a star.

It is as though her berries were carried

by sparrows' legs, with their claws.

Two cavalry troops, of Romans and Zanj, now stand

in green shields she selects for them.

How delightful she is, lawful and forbidden—

in her vineyard or her cup, how delightful!
