A sick man in the land of Rayy, worn out by his illness;
Sick in the land of Rayy, his malady exhausted him,
and he has no physician except in Jayy.
And he has no healer but in distant Iraq.
غريبٌa stranger غريبُsingular in القدرِstanding والفضلِand merit والهَوىand love
ألاindeed كلُّevery حالcondition of الفاضلينَthe worthy عجيبُis strange
A stranger, singular in standing, merit, and love—
A stranger, strange of fate and grace and passion!
indeed, every circumstance of the worthy is strange.
Indeed, the state of the virtuous is always strange.

I have no fault that warrants a plight like mine,
And I have done no wrong to deserve my condition,
except that, as they say, I am a man of letters.
Except that, as they say, I am a man of letters.
أبَىhas refused اللّهُGod جمعَuniting الحظِّgood fortune والفضلِand merit للفتىfor a young man

God has refused to unite good fortune and merit for a man
God has refused to join fortune and grace for the youth
until one sees water that a flame has watered.
Until he sees the water lapped up by flame.
فإنْso if عِشتُI live لمnot أبرَحْI leave بلاديmy homeland وإنand if أمُتْI die

So if I live, I shall not leave my homeland; and if I die,
If I live, I will not leave my homeland, and if I die,
then may no stranger ever die after me.
Then after me let no stranger die in time.
