I remind Majd al-Mulk of my need, which

that generous, noble-natured man undertook to fulfill.

And I lament to him my ailing state; it is only

through his eminence that I hope it may recover.

Nor has he been so slow to grant it that I must prod him

with a pointed verse whose composer hit the mark:

“Every debtor has settled his debt and paid his creditor in full,

but ʿAzza’s creditor is put off and tormented.”

Rather, it is departure’s nearness and my bewilderment:

I hurry it on a journey, yet make it stay.

And the man most deserving of success is one with a need

for which I have interceded, while the nights are its adversary.

    فأفضلُ آلاءِ الرجالِ عميمُها

    So he showered all mankind with bounty and favored me especially;

for the finest of men’s favors are those that reach everyone.
