نَيْلُوفَرٌ يسبحُ في لُجَّةٍ
عليهِupon it ألوانٌcolors منof اللَّبْسِclothing
عليهِ ألوانٌ من اللَّبْسِ
A water lily swims in deep water,
A water lily swimming in a pond
Wearing attire of many colors,
With patches of clothing upon it
مُظاهِرٌlayering ثوبَa robe حِدادٍmourning علىover
مُظاهِرٌ ثوبَ حِدادٍ على
ثوبa robe بياضٍwhiteness عُلَّsteeped بالوَرْسِin wars (yellow dye)
ثوب بياضٍ عُلَّ بالوَرْسِ
Layering a robe of mourning over
Showing the garb of mourning over
A white robe steeped in wars, a yellow dye.
A dress whitened by alum
فالشطرُso the half فيin أعلاهُits upper part فيat مأتمٍa mourning gathering
فالشطرُ في أعلاهُ في مأتمٍ
وشطرُهand its half الأسفلُlower فيat عُرْسِa wedding
وشطرُه الأسفلُ في عُرْسِ
So its upper half is at a mourning gathering,
So the upper hemistich is in grief
And its lower half is at a wedding.
While its lower one is in a wedding
مغَمِّضٌclosing its eyes طولَthroughout الدُّجَىthe darkness of night ناعِسٌdrowsy
مغَمِّضٌ طولَ الدُّجَى ناعِسٌ
جُفونُهits eyelids تُفْتَحُare opened فيin الشَّمْسِthe sun
جُفونُه تُفْتَحُ في الشَّمْسِ
Drowsy, it keeps its eyes closed all night;
Sleeping all night long with eyes shut
Its eyelids open in the sun.
