عليمٌwell versed بإمرارِin making firm العزائمِresolutions والنَّقْضِand undoing
Leave me to my proud, unbending ways, for I
Leave me to my character, bright as the sun
Know well how to make resolutions firm and undo them.
I know well how to pass and repeal decrees
أزيدُI add إِذاwhen أيسرتُI prosper فضلَan extra measure تواضُعٍof humility
ويُزهىand grows haughty إِذاwhen أعسرتُI become poor بعضيone part of me علىover بعضيanother part of me
When I prosper, I add a further measure of humility;
I give more when at ease, out of gracious humility
And when I am poor, one part of me exalts itself over another.
And withdraw when hardship makes me guard my honor
فذلكfor that عندَin اليُسْرِprosperity أكسبُmore effective in earning للثَّنَاpraise
وهذاكَand this عندin العُسْرِhardship أصونُmore protective للعِرْضِof honor
For that, in prosperity, wins more praise;
For in ease I gain praise by generosity
And this, in hardship, better safeguards honor.
And in hardship protect my dignity
أرىI see الغُصْنَthe branch يَعرىgrows bare وهوwhile it يسموrises high بنفسهِby itself
ويوقَرُand is laden حملاًwith fruit حينwhen يدنوit draws near منto الأرضِthe earth
I see the branch grow bare while it raises itself high,
I see the branch stripped bare as it reaches to the sky
And become laden with fruit when it draws near the earth.
And bowed down by fruit when nearing the ground
