May I be your ransom! Accusing me, you have made me hear

a call bearing the brand of indignation.

Yet surely a magnanimous man of Umayya who has wronged me

pardons the guilty offender and shows forbearance.

Why, then, am I held to account for the offense of one denied entry

at his door—mere importunity, but for the imputation of guilt?

Look again at what I say, and do not be

like the mangy beast: another is cauterized while it remains unharmed.

    وإِنكَ أولى بالجميلِ وألزمُ

    I seek protection for you in the forbearance of which you are worthy;

and surely you are most worthy of kindness, and most steadfast in it.

So trust my devoted loyalty to you, and safeguard for my sake

the reins of glory: I hold fast to your rope.
