It is longing, until the beds cannot rest,
It is longing, though the beds find no rest,
And the anguish of passion, until the ribs constrict.
And the affliction of passion, though ribs grow narrow.

My two friends, the ordeal of separation is not easy
My friend, what is this parting to me so easy,
to me, nor is the bond with loved ones lost.
To me, and no tryst of lovers lost?

Nor does love's anguish cease if loved ones depart,
Not yearning, though lovers have packed up and left,
Nor is patience useful if separation endures.
Not patience, though separation persists beneficent.

And indeed love's cure is for passion to cease,
And though the cure of love is for passion to cease,
so I may find solace—but can the days at Yabrin return?
So bid me farewell - but when did we purpose to meet?

My eyelids will not be mastered by sleep,
even briefly, when the reclining stars stream down.
Kept awake as the stars voyage over the beds.

They are accustomed to not be stemmed, my tears,
over the secret, until the secret lies naked and spread abroad.
Until the secret is bare and far spread.

Who will vindicate me against the days? Reproach is no deterrent
My excuse before the days is not censure keeping them back,
to them, nor is rebuke effective upon them.
Nor reproach making them yield.

They do not turn kindly toward me to make amends,
For they are not, in blaming me, sympathetic,
Nor return to me with kindness.
Nor do they, in beauty, return to me.

They muddy my drink, though its brimming waters are clear,
They make my drinking bitter, though his wine is pure,
And constrict my breast, though it is broad and spacious.
And they narrow my breast, though it was open and wide.

The face of my pursuits scowled at me, and awry went
They have tortured me, so the face of demands has darkened,
my affairs; the ways upward were barred to me.
And my affairs grew straitened, the horizons shut to me.

Were it not for the aid of the King, a suitor would fail,
And hopes would be turned back upon their heels.
And hopes be driven back on their heels.

Remote from the realm of care would be best - it could not be
let terrifying calamities fill his breast.
That sorrows so sublime should fill this breast.

Hidden is the path of his stratagems, unfathomed
A mystery is the tread of guile, imperceptible
by the discerning; nor can a deceiver reach him.
To the keenest intellect, nor penetrated by cunning.

And if any being escaped the rule of destiny,
And if any creature deviated from the decree of fate,
the fates would not know what he was doing.
Then would the divine web itself be undone.

An ardent seeker of the highest noble deeds, resolved
Eager for the finest of virtues, steadfast,
upon his purpose, firm in judgment, wakeful while asleep.
Awake of mind, though care weighs heavy on the eyelids.

Bold, when fear threatens his family,
Eloquent in speech when assemblies gather around him.
Yet gentle, when eyes are turned to him in hope.

When he appears, eyes are bewildered, fixed in a stare,
When he appears, eyes are dazzled and necks bent in awe,
And when he attacks, necks bend in submission.
When he departs, necks are craned, eager for a glimpse.

He observes how matters will unfold, as though
his intuitions were scouts before the unseen.
Their mysteries before they happen are displayed to him.

His breast is not constricted in calamity's straits,
So his breast in time of need is not straitened,
Nor is his bounty remote from a seeker of favor.
Nor his nature, before the seeker of bounty, withheld.

He raced, making exhausted rivals turn their reins away from him;
He sprang forth and declined the help of hands,
They raced him, while he crossed the finish at ease.
So they aided him, and he outstripped even zeal.

Hear, O Amin al-Mulk, the appeal of one who reproaches
Will you not, O trustee of the kingdom, hear the complaint
Time—calamities have weakened his two flints.
Of one aggrieved by Time and its crushing misfortunes?

Since hands bestowed are a trust kept by the noble?

Of him whose heart disguises, though his face deceives?

His surface with you is peace, though underneath he wars,
But his inward self is war against you, contending.
His open manner concord, while inwardly he divides.

It is not denial by one like you that dismays me,
I am not made desolate by want such as yours,
But the adversity of fortune that dismays me.
But I am devastated to be exiled from sincere virtue.

My greatest failing is that my merits
I am deprived, though I have no means of access but them.
Have dispossessed me, leaving no means beyond them.

Then may the pouring rains never water the world!
Then no liberal showers fall from the heavens.

Are you content that I attached myself to your heights,
only for severing forces to betray their strands in my hands?
Only for their strength in my hands to fail?

Far be it that one hoping for your abundant bounty should be seen
So keep me not, aspiring to your abundance,
like one grasping water which his fingers cannot hold.
Like one trying to grasp water, whose fingers cannot contain it.

Yet here I am, my star sinking because of you, falling back.
But here am I, fallen again into your disfavor.

I abase myself before those beneath me and surrender my reins,
I humble myself before my lessers and dole out my lead,
And turn my gaze away, shamed and downcast.
Then turn my eyes down in shame and confusion.

And one whose sword-belt lies below my sandal thong takes precedence over me,
Those of humbler merit are advanced over me,
So I lower my eyes, while merit's cheek is dusty and humbled.
While I dissemble, though merit is my loss.

And truly I am ashamed before your glory
while one like me receives scant favor from it and is neglected.
To be seen as one deprived of fortune, abandoned.

Nor is that a shortcoming in my striving for lofty rank,
That was no failing in my due estimation,
But a decree fulfilling what was ordained.
But a decree that came to pass despite all efforts.

Does a builder seek to demolish the pillar of kindness,
I am left as one ruin has toppled the pillar of glory,
and a planter cut down the planting of favor?
And destroyed the shoots planted in the soil of merit.

Content that abasement be reserved for me, while the eminent
whose bounty is abroad while the sun's horn is not?
Prospers - though matched in grace we never were.

nothing bars obtaining from it what is desired.
For without attaining what is sought, nothing prevents it.

Even if yearnings were to turn me back toward you.
Though urges pull me toward you, and attractions.

In remembrance of you burns, and turns to you in passion.

So if the beautiful calls me back to your side,
the skeins of praise from me passed your court by.
Then there is no one who praises and honors you as I do.
