Indeed, while dawn was radiant with smiles, I was stirred

By dusky doves on the playground of the boughs.

Among them swayed a noble one of supple bearing,

The clouds' saliva sprayed upon its two flanks.

When it stirs in darkness, their cooing reveals

The buried secrets of hearts that conceal them.

The clustered sand-dunes on the protected pasture's right were watered

By spittle from dusky-lipped, nurturing dawn visitors.

And an arched one shared with them the rich milk of rain,

The passage of gentle breezes yielding to it.

And the slender arak shoots in its air were wooed,

Their flanks perfumed, by one whose smiles were wide.

When they are stirred among the branches, you think them

To lend their twisting the writhing of mottled snakes.

When late afternoons languish there, down are shed

Upon it, by the night-clouds, streaming tears.

And a company of riders traveled while dawn lay in its mother's lap,

Upon the forks of camel-saddles, their turbans tilted.

Pervasive care and night-travel had made them lean,

And the swift stride of camels and the undertaking of hardships.

Their faces had grown thin, their scant moisture drained,

Though beauty's edge still crowned their noses.

Men who bend their interlaced ribs,

Leaning over the sting of ever-clinging cares.

When they are born, polished mail is strewn upon them,

And they grip the spear before wearing protective amulets.

I guided them toward the wilderness, and indeed I am

Just after sore feet, a shatterer of the mountain passes' horns.

    أُلوّي على رَوْقِ الغَرام حيازمي

    I restrain the tyranny of cares with my resolve;

I coil my breast about the horn of passion.

No supreme ordeal has softened my temper,

Nor have dark calamities twisted my girdles.

And a land where I shook honor from my shoulder,

As gazelles of the dune-patches shake off arta shrubs.

There I cast off the first bloom of firmly rooted glory,

And clothed the cup there in a robe of crimson dye.

The lovely-necked woman knows that I

Make the breasts of keen spearheads my resting-places.

Saffron-stained at the points, their breast spits out

The spittle of foes' livers and skulls.

I have no excuse before glory while my swords are

Thirsty for the watering-place of necks and throats.

Perhaps I shall see myself in a pavilion of battle-dust,

With my battle-roars filling the ear of Time.

I shake the Rudayni spear's shafts, pouring

The water of swords upon battle's glowing coal.

    وهل ينفعُ المكروبَ عضُّ الأباهمِ

    My fingertips have indeed bled in fury against Time;

But does biting one's thumbs help the anguished?

Is it not time my adversary traveled by night and climbed

The ridges of the gloom of mighty calamities?

And I drive them into the desert's heart, as though I

Set eagles from among them swaying in their bridle-bits,

Scowling ones that shake tanned hides onto the spears,

When brown spear-shafts are joined to wrists.

I see the blows of days as a gentle breeze's puff,

And wading into death's depths as a sleeper's doze.

Death is only to see glory's tender nose-tip

    Humbled in a nose-halter by Time's guile.

I bear witness: a stirring of longing has swayed my heart,

Tightening the strands of my prudence, yet weakening my resolves.

I make peace with my reproachers over it, while

The after-pangs of ancient sorrows have fluttered in my heart.

A lingering trace of love whose marks were all but erased

By the vicissitudes of unjust, ruthless nights.

Yet my heart is a markh tree; passion is kindled

By its hidden depths, from its bond of old.

Time's vicissitudes enrage me, and seldom

Do the teeth of gnawers leave a mark upon my wood.

They know that, when a calamity's

Flanks grow dark, I enter the lions' midday resting-place.

I am the feller of an adversary who grinds his fang,

When dawns blot out the feathers of old vultures.

I redden the trailing skirts of dust and charge,

And unravel the tightly interlocked thread of the battle-strait.

And when the old camel is robbed of its shadow,

I shake into motion the bands of swift-striding riding-camels.

Whenever ambitions present themselves, you see me

A choking bone to them between uvulas and throats.
