خليليَّmy two friends لاmay ... not راعَfrighten الفراقُseparation حشاكُماthe hearts of you both
ولاand may ... not فرَّقَتْscatter شملَthe gathering of الجميعِeveryone نَواكُماthe departure of you both
My two friends, may separation never frighten your hearts,
nor may your departure scatter the gathered company;
ولاand may ... not زِلتُماyou two cease to be كالفرقدينِlike the two Farqad stars تلازُماًin constant companionship
أجدّكماin earnest, you two? لاnot تذكرانِyou two remember أخاكماthe brother of you both
and may you always remain inseparable, like the two Farqad stars.
Do you two truly not remember your brother?
لئِنif indeed خُنْتماyou two betrayed فيin العهدِthe covenant بعديafter my departure فإنَّنيthen indeed I
وحقِّكماby the honor of you both لمnot أرجُI hoped for إلّاexcept رضاكماthe pleasure of you both
If indeed you two have betrayed the covenant after my departure, I,
by your honor, have hoped for nothing but your pleasure.
وإنand if ذُقتماyou two tasted السُّلوانَsolace بعدِيafter my departure فإنَّنيthen indeed I
وحقِّby the sanctity of الهَوىlove لمnot أسْلُI find solace حتىuntil أراكماI see you both
And if you two have tasted solace after my departure, I,
by love's sanctity, have no solace until I see you both.
أغارُI am jealous علىof ريحِthe wind of الصَّبَاthe east إنْif تنفستْit breathes
بريحكماwith the fragrance of you both أوor أعقبتْpasses بثراكماover the soil of you both
I am jealous of the east wind if it breathes
your fragrance, or passes over your soil.
وماand not ذُبتُI melted away إلّاexcept لاعتلاقِto cling to نسيمهاits breeze
إِذاwhen خطرتْit wafts past حتىso that أزورَI may visit ذراكُماthe precincts of you both
I have melted away only to cling to its breeze
when it wafts past, so that I may visit your precincts.
ولاand no شجوَgrief إلّاexcept أنّthat سَجْليmy full water-bucket سقاكُماwatered you both
وأنّكماand that you two يُعطَىis given سوايَsomeone other than me حيَاكماthe rain of you both
And my only grief is that my full bucket watered you both,
and that your rain is bestowed on someone other than me.
فإنْthen if نجتمعْwe meet قبلbefore المماتِdeath فناقتيthen my she-camel
وراكبُهاand her rider والحاديانُand the two camel-drivers فداكُماa ransom for you both
If we meet before death, then my she-camel,
and her rider and the two camel-drivers are a ransom for you both.
وإنand if متُّI die منfrom قبلِbefore اللقاءِmeeting فإنَّنيthen indeed I
سأُنشَرُI shall be resurrected إنْif مرَّتْpass عليَّover me يَداكُماthe hands of you both
And if I die before we meet, I
shall be raised to life if your hands pass over me.
أُحِبُّكُماI love you both طولَthroughout الحياةِlife فإنthen if أمتْI die
فلاthen no شكَّdoubt أنْthat يهوَىwill love صدايَmy shade صداكُماthe shades of you both
I love you both throughout life; and if I die,
then surely my shade will love the shades of you both.
ولوand even if شُقَّwere split open عنto expose سوداءِthe dark core of قلبيmy heart وفتشتْand were searched
جوانبُهits sides لمnot يُلْفَbe found إلّاexcept هواكُماlove for you both
And even if my heart's dark core were laid bare and a search made
of its sides, nothing would be found but love for you both.
