They say: Taj al-Mulk, after his obscurity,

has become a Pharaoh and seized the power to forbid and command.

So I said to them: Do not envy him; consider

the consequences of what time’s vicissitudes bring.

It is as though I see him, the blade taking his head,

and his limbs being threaded through the dark rings.

Ask God to keep the vizier alive, for he

will one day carry him upon a rough mount—

    يعافى على متنيهِ من ضَغْطةِ القبرِ

    upon a mount whose mother no stallion impregnates;

upon its two flanks, he is spared the grave’s squeeze.

But if he escapes him—and God fulfills His purpose—

then he will be a blind man, begging in mosques or teaching recitation.
