    فما طاشتْ ولا أشوت سِهامي

    Toward you I have directed volleys of speech;

    so my arrows have neither strayed nor merely grazed.

    And in your praise I loose swift night-travelers,

    as wine’s heat courses through the bones.

    Wandering verses, yet never without familiar charm,

    for whose beauty the dove’s collar is undone.

    Praise like that which gardens offer,

    with their fresh bloom, for the clouds’ bounty.

    يُكِبُّ لهيبَهُ عذبُ الضرامِ

    A keen poetic gift unfastens its tether;

    a sweet-burning blaze brings its flame low.

    And are my words for anyone but a guardian of honor,

    who dwells at the summit of noble virtues?

    In every difficulty he offers effective aid,

    making the bloodied brown spears pour out tears.

    And affection clear as the juice of the vine,

    that thins his nature’s densely gathered cloud.

    Noble endeavors return to his sides,

    and he raises the banner of exalted ranks.

    When he kneels facing a rival, that rival retreats,

    with the ostrich’s swift gait forced upon him.

    Noble endeavors shimmer in his character,

    with a dignity above Shamām’s twin peaks.

    I see you lending me a noble regard,

    whose like quenches parching thirst.

    Yet you have seen only a falcon’s attempts to rise,

    its feathers broken, its fierceness crushed.

    His poetic gift overflowed until you could see him

    dripping words as a wine-straining cloth drips.

    Then time’s choking sorrows checked his keenness,

    passing him goblets of poison.

    And an age’s affliction shook his pillar,

    gnawing at his full moon before its fullness.

    He asks his time about restoring a fortune

    that would bring life back, gentle in its lowing.

    And how can one find certainty about a goal

    whose truth lies beyond ʿIṣām?

    And how can one trust an answerer

    offering sincere counsel, after Ḥadhām has lied?

    Perhaps, O leader, you will restore my necklace,

    soon after its scattering, with its thread secure,

    ولوَّى عِطْفَهُ ليَّ الزِّمامِ

    and turn back to me a time that has departed

    and twisted its flank aside as a rein is twisted;

    مواردَ طُفَّحاً زُرْقَ الجِمَامِ

    and lead me, now that my throat is parched,

    to brimming watering places with blue pools;

    يعِزُّ بها على الدهرِ انتقامي

    and secure for me a resplendent favor,

    through which my revenge on time grows mighty;

    بعَطفةِ منعمٍ حِدبٍ محامي

    and thrust the shoulder of the days away from me

    with a caring, protective benefactor’s kindness;

    كليلَ الغرب محدودَ اللثامِ

    and turn their plotting back from me, humbled,

    its edge blunted, its veil curtailed;

    and make a sun of yours rise in my abode,

    driving the murky shades of darkness from it.

    Thus you will alight with me and make my gratitude your slave,

    through all the days, by your mighty favors.
