O you who gloat because time has turned against me,

Why gloat if my foot has slipped?

My face is radiant; no dark blemish has appeared upon it.

And my honor is smooth; no worms have marred its hide.

And wealth—I squander it at times and replenish it,

So there is neither grief nor regret over its loss.

My learning would have surpassed that of those who came before,

But for the distinction of precedence won by antiquity.

And ignorance is bondage for the soul; if it gains

Freedom, then people and the world are its servants.

    فلا أُبالي بما شادُوا وما هَدَمُوا

    I have known my days, both outwardly and inwardly;

So I care nothing for what they built or what they demolished.

No desire remains for me to pursue in life.

Having and lacking have become alike to me.

    سيَّانِ عنديَ أنْ يأسوا وأن كَلِمُوا

    The disparagement of ignorant men who belittle me has not distressed me;

Whether they heal or are wounded is all the same to me.

There is no difference between their approval and their anger,

So do not care what they built or what they demolished.

Has my misfortune raised them above their rank,

So that they stand on equal footing with us in our endeavors?

Let not the enemies gloat over a blow that fell

Upon me suddenly; time's reversals have a target.

For the ruler's onslaught carries no

Shame, even if honor is assailed or blood is shed.
