أقولُI say لنِضويto my worn-out mount وهوwhile it منof شجنٍsorrow خِلْوُfree
حنانيكَyour mercy, please قدindeed أدميتَyou made bleed كلمْيَmy wound ياO نِضْوُworn-out mount
I say to my worn-out mount, while it is free of sorrow:
I say to Nidā as he grieves from longing,
Have mercy—you have made my wound bleed, O worn-out mount.
"Your affection has made my words tender, oh Nidā!"
تعاليْcome أقاسمكِI share with you الهمومَthe sorrows فتعلميso you may know
بأنّكِthat you مماof what تشتكيsuffers كَبِديmy liver خلوُfree
Come, let me share the sorrows with you, so you may know
Come let me share with you my concerns so you may know,
that you are free of what my liver suffers.
That you are what my troubled heart complains of in its solitude.
تُريدينَyou seek مرعىpasture الريفِthe countryside والبدوَand the desert أبتغيI seek
وماand not يستويare alike الريفُthe countryside العراقيُّIraqi والبدوُand the desert
You seek the countryside's pasture, while I seek the desert;
You wish for the countryside and nomads, I seek
And the Iraqi countryside and the desert are not alike.
But the Iraqi countryside is not like the nomads.
هُناكَthere نسيمُbreeze الريحِthe wind مثليَlike me لاغِبٌweary
ومثليَand like me ماءُwater المُزنِthe rainclouds موردُهُits source صَفْوُpure
There, the wind's breeze is weary, like me;
There the breeze is free like me, aimless
And, like me, the rainclouds' water is pure at its source.
And its spring water pure like my love.
ومحجوبةٍand many a secluded woman لوif هبَّتِblew الريحُthe wind أرقلتhurried
إليهاto her الغيارىthe jealous guardians بالعواليwith tall spears ولمand did not يلْوُواturn aside
And many a secluded woman—if the wind blew, they would hurry
If the wind blew towards a veiled beloved,
to her, the jealous guardians with tall spears, never turning aside.
Her admirers would ride to her on peaks, fearless.
صبوتُI yearned إليهاfor her وهيwhile she ممنوعةُguarded الحِمَىthe sanctuary
فحتّامَso how long أصبوI yearn نحوtoward مَنْone who مالُهhis wealth نجوُa secret
I yearned for her, though her sanctuary was guarded;
I poured passion towards her though she was forbidden
So how long shall I yearn toward one whose wealth is a secret?
So helplessly my passion turns to one whose affection can be attained.
هوىًlove ليسnot يُسليmakes one forget القربُnearness عنهabout it ولاnor النَّوىseparation
وشجوٌand sorrow قديمٌlong-standing ليسnot يُشبِهُهُresembles it شجوُsorrow
A love that neither nearness nor separation can make me forget;
A love that neither nearness nor distance comforts,
And a long-standing sorrow unlike any other sorrow.
An old longing that no other longing resembles,
فأسْرٌthus captivity ولاand no فَكٌّrelease وَوَجْدٌand longing ولاand no أسىًsolace
وسُقْمٌand sickness ولاand no بُرْءٌrecovery وسكرٌand drunkenness ولاand no صَحْوُsobriety
Thus, captivity without release, and longing without solace;
Imprisoned with no release, fervor yet no relief,
And sickness without recovery, and drunkenness without sobriety.
Sickness with no cure, intoxication yet no sobering.
عناءٌsuffering مُعَنٍّtormenting وهوyet it عنديَto me راحةٌrest
وسُمٌّand poison ذُعافٌdeadly طعمُهits taste فيin فميmy mouth حُلوُsweet
Tormenting suffering, yet to me it is rest;
Exertion that for me is repose,
And deadly poison whose taste is sweet in my mouth.
And poison whose taste in my mouth is sweet.
ولولاand were it not for الهَوىlove ماnot شاقنيmade me yearn لمعُa flash بارقٍlightning
ولاnor هدَّنيcrushed me شجوٌsorrow ولاnor هزَّنيstirred me شَدوُsong
And were it not for love, no flash of lightning would make me yearn,
If not for passion no lightning would have exhausted me,
Nor would sorrow crush me, nor song stir me.
No longing led me astray nor song shaken me.
