كفَىsuffices حَزَناًas sorrow بأنthat تمضيpass اللياليthe nights
وليسand there is not إِلىto لقائكُمُmeeting you سبيلُa way
Sorrow enough: the nights pass away,
It is sorrow enough that the nights pass,
and there is no road to meeting you.
And there is no way to meet you.
أعيشُI live تجلُّداًby steeling myself وأموتُand I die شوقاًof longing
وحظِّيand my share منكمُof you أبداًalways قليلُscant
I live, feigning fortitude, and die of longing,
I live by steeling myself, and die of longing,
while my share of you is forever scant.
And my share of you is always scant.
إِذاwhen العذبُthe sweet water الزلالُcrystal-clear كَرعتُI drink directly فيهِfrom it
شَرِقْتُI choke بهِon it ولمand was not يُروَquenched الغليلُthe burning thirst
Whenever I dip my mouth into sweet, limpid water and drink,
When I drink of sweet, crystal-clear water,
I choke on it, and it does not quench my burning thirst.
I choke on it, and burning thirst remains unquenched.
ألاah منwho للغريبfor the stranger يَنالُtakes its toll منهon him
جوىًa burning grief ماwhich is بينbetween أضلعِهhis ribs دخيلُlodged within
Ah, who will aid the exile, whom there assails
Ah, who will help the stranger, assailed by
a deep-seated anguish lodged between his ribs?
A burning grief lodged deep between his ribs?
يحِنُّhe yearns إِذاwhen الحَمامُthe doves الوُرقُthe gray ones حنَّتْcoo plaintively
ويطرَبُand he is stirred كلّماwhenever هبّتblows قَبُولُan east wind
He yearns whenever the dusky doves coo,
He yearns when the gray doves coo plaintively,
and is stirred whenever the east wind blows.
And is stirred whenever the east wind blows.
ويطويand folds up صبرَهُhis patience ريحٌa wind شَمالٌnortherly
وينشُرُand unfolds وجدَهْhis passion راحٌwine شَمولُintoxicating
The north wind folds away his patience,
And a north wind folds up his patience,
and all-pervading wine unfolds his passion.
And heady wine unfolds his passion.
وإنَّand indeed بمسقطِat the foot of العلمينthe two landmarks ماءًwater

Indeed, at the foot of the Two Landmarks lies water—
And indeed, at the foot of the two landmarks lies water,
fresh and abundant—with deep shade before it,
Sweet and wholesome, with deep shade before it:
حمامhot springs ليسthere is not ليfor me فيهنَّin them وردٌa turn to drink
وظلٌّand shade ليسthere is not ليfor me فيهin it مَقِيلُa place for midday rest
and doves, though among them I have no access to the water,
Hot springs where I have no turn to drink,
and shade, though in it I have no place to rest at noon.
And shade where I have no place to rest at noon.
