زَوَّجْتُهاI married her off ليقِلَّso that it might lessen عَتْبُreproach وُشاتِهاher slanderers
زَوَّجْتُها ليقِلَّ عَتْبُ وُشاتِها
ويكونَand might be عنديwith me صَفْوُهَاher pure essence ومِزَاجُهاand her blend
ويكونَ عندي صَفْوُهَا ومِزَاجُها
I married her off to lessen her slanderers’ reproach,
I married her off so her reproaches would lessen
And her pure essence and her blend would be mine.
And her temperament and disposition would remain with me
ماwhat ضرَّنِيharmed me أنْthat كنتُI was صاحبَowner of ضيعةٍan estate
ما ضرَّنِي أنْ كنتُ صاحبَ ضيعةٍ
ليmine دَخْلُهاits income وعلىand upon سوايَsomeone other than me خَراجُهاits land tax
لي دَخْلُها وعلى سوايَ خَراجُها
What harm did it do me to own an estate
It does not harm me that I own a small farm
Whose income is mine, while another bears its land tax?
With income for me and taxes for others
