I dueled Time, my equal foe, and it unsheathed

white sword blades amid the black locks at my temples.

    فاغْبَرَّ من نقعِ الطِّرادِ مسابحي

    And renowned battles were fought between us;

so my coursers turned grey with the dust of mounted combat.

I raced it over the course, but it outstripped me

when I was a young colt; the mature steed's pace fell short of it.

And I dismounted from a dark bay, tireless and swift,

and carried my gear upon an exhausted grey.

It stumbles with its rider and abandons him when

the cry 'To battle!' is raised against the spiteful foe.

Little hope of escape for one who duels his equal

on the day of combat, upon a stumbling, headstrong mount.
