ومساعدٍand a companion ليfor me فيin البكاءweeping مُساهرٍkeeping vigil with another
بالليلat night يؤنِسُنيhe comforts me بطيبِwith the sweetness of لقائِهِhis company
And a companion in weeping keeps vigil with me,
A companion to help me weep, staying up all night
At night he comforts me with the sweetness of his company.
Comforting me with his kind company
هامِيstreaming المدامعthe tear ducts أوuntil يُصابَhe is stricken بعينهِin his eye
حاميhot الأضالعِthe ribs أوuntil يموتَhe dies بدائهِof his malady
His eyes stream with tears until his eye is stricken;
Whether my tears put him to sleep or injure his eye
His ribs are hot until he dies of his malady.
Whether my ribs break his bones or his illness kills him
غرثانُfamished يأخذhe draws روحَهhis life منfrom جسمهِhis body
فحياتُهso his life مرهونةٌis bound بفَنائِهِto his extinction
Famished, he draws his life from his body,
A scabby person who takes his soul from his body
So his life is bound to his own extinction.
So his life is hostage to his demise
يُشفِيhe verges علىon تَلَفٍruin فيُضربُthen is struck عُنْقُهُhis neck
فيكونُand so it becomes أقوىthe strongest موجبٍcause لِشفائهِfor his healing
He verges on ruin, and then his neck is struck,
Heals from injury then gets his neck hit
And that becomes the most effective means of his healing.
To make it a stronger cause of his recovery
ساويتُهI have matched him فيin لونهhis color ونُحولهِand his thinness
وفضَلتُهand I have surpassed him فيin بُؤسهِhis misery وشقَائهِand his suffering
I have matched him in his color and his thinness,
I made him equal in his color and features
And surpassed him in his misery and suffering.
And preferred him in his misery and hardship
هَبْgrant أَنَّهُthat he مِثليlike me بحُرقةِin the burning of قلبهhis heart
وسُهادهand his sleeplessness طولَthroughout الدُّجَىthe night's darkness وبكائهِand his weeping
Grant that he is like me in his heart's burning,
Assume he is like me, burning inside
And in his sleeplessness through the darkness and his weeping—
His pillow all night long is his crying
أفوادِعٌis one, then, at ease طولَthroughout النهارthe day مرفَّهٌpampered
كمعذّبٍlike one tormented بصباحهin his morning ومسائهِand his evening
Is one, then, at ease all day and pampered,
Someone carefree all day long
Like one tormented morning and evening?
Like a tortured soul day and night
