And when the flock came into view, I said to my companion:

May your longing for the unattainable bring you joy!

Do you hope to find favor with them, while I

am truly content with one, if she obliges?

And among the last of the flock, where she appeared,

was one who delays and withholds, despite her ample wealth.

My two friends, shall we pause at the solitary sandy rise?

Perhaps one who entrusts and one who squanders may meet.

For there, as we knew it, stands a spreading tree,

to which a flock returns in the evening.

One of those that spread their shade; as for its stature,

it is like fresh palm fronds; as for its soil, it is fertile.

Ah, if only I could turn aside beneath its shade,

even if I were naked there and hungry.

I lost a whole heart there; if only it

were returned to me today, even broken.

And I am truly ashamed before longing to have it seen—

my heart intact, with no cracks in it.

And I loathe my eye for begrudging its water,

when brilliant lightning has flashed in the Hejaz.

    وأعلمُ أني خاسِرٌ وأبيعُ

    And I make a losing bargain, selling my good sense for my folly;

and I know I am the loser, yet I sell.
