ولوand if أنَّthat الهمومَthe sorrows كلمْنَthey wounded جسماًa body
ولو أنَّ الهمومَ كلمْنَ جسماً
لبانَwould surely appear عليَّupon me آثارُmarks الكُلومِthe wounds
لبانَ عليَّ آثارُ الكُلومِ
And if sorrows could wound a body,
If worries were a physical form
the marks of wounds would show upon me,
The scars of wounds would show upon me
لفقدِfor the loss of أخٍa brother كفقدِlike the loss of البدرِthe full moon لمَّاwhen
لفقدِ أخٍ كفقدِ البدرِ لمَّا
تكاملَreached fullness واستوىand stood بينamong النُّجومِthe stars
تكاملَ واستوى بين النُّجومِ
for the loss of a brother, like the loss of the full moon when
For the loss of a brother like the loss of the full moon
it reached fullness and stood among the stars.
When it has reached its peak amongst the stars
تصاحَبْنَاwe became companions علىon the basis of حُبٍّlove عفيفٍchaste
تصاحَبْنَا على حُبٍّ عفيفٍ
فصارso became بناwith us إِلىinto وُدٍّaffection كريمِnoble
فصار بنا إِلى وُدٍّ كريمِ
We became companions in a chaste love,
We befriended each other with chaste love
so it led us to a noble affection.
Thus, a precious friendship formed between us
ولمand not يكُwas شكلُهhis kind شكليmy kind ولكنْbut
ولم يكُ شكلُه شكلي ولكنْ
جناياتُwrongs القلوبِthe hearts علىagainst الجُسومِthe bodies
جناياتُ القلوبِ على الجُسومِ
And he was not of my kind, yet
His appearance was not my appearance but
such are the wrongs hearts inflict upon bodies.
The injustices of hearts are upon bodies
رَضِيتُI was content بهwith him منfrom الدنياthe world نصِيباًa share
رَضِيتُ به من الدنيا نصِيباً
فصارso became الدهرُTime فيهِconcerning him منamong خصوميmy adversaries
فصار الدهرُ فيهِ من خصومي
I was content with him as my share of this world,
I was content with him as my share of life
so Time became one of my adversaries over him.
Thus time became against me through him
