    Enough! I will not heed my goader.

    And glimpse your answer in the down on Alalmush's cheek.

    فإنِ استطعتَ القولَ فيه فحَرِّشِ

    And look at him, displeased or pleased;

    For if you can speak against him, then goad me on.

    Sated with the water of youth, choking on it,

    Drunk on the wine of beauty, exhilarated.

    I have not forgotten—the arena offering his beauty as plunder

    To his onlookers—when he appeared upon the dappled steed,

    من لم يَغُضَّ الطرفَ دونَهما غُشِي

    In twin robes of beauty and sumptuous brocade;

    Whoever did not lower his gaze before them swooned.

    And the wind swept away from the line of his cheek-down

    His twin temple-locks, in ringlets and disarray,

    As the steed galloped—what heart did not take flight

    With passion, and what eye was not dazzled?

    And he shot; an eye rivaled him in hitting the mark:

    Whoever its arrows struck dead was never revived.

    Then he turned back, exultant, his brocade put to shame

    By the silk of a cheek embroidered with down.
