    If we took sulfur and then mixed

    a dead body with it, and moistened it,

    and blended the two with patience and gentleness,

    and thereby made gentleness binding upon ourselves—

    And sulfur’s immersion in the body—

    the white body—is among the hardest things for us.

    A settling body and a subtle spirit:

    the soul was formed from them, in between.

    And they called what had flown from it pure gold,

    and what settled in the vessel, silver.

    Then sulfur felt some of the fire’s blaze,

    and sought to flee, as we saw.

    صار في جوفهن لما التقينا

    So bodies restrained it from running away;

    it came to be within them when we met.

    ساد من حرها اتقينا

    And the spirits took shelter in the density of the bodies;

    against its heat we guarded ourselves.

    And we persisted in repetition, dissolution and coagulation,

    so we attained in our undertaking what we desired.
