Light has its source in the heights,

and darkness has its source below.

And heat, which is light, is by nature disposed

    in every circumstance to rise.

The ends of their two diameters grew far apart,

so they diverged across the farthest, longest span.

Thus one sinks by nature and does not rise,

and one rises by nature and has not descended.

And the celestial spheres revolved and drew forth

our secrets in their lower reaches from on high,

fusing light with darkness, and with

    density, subtlety, never flagging.

And from them our constitutions were fused,

until, from them, they attained the finest state.
