بنفسيَwith my life as ransom منher whom أودعتُهاI laid her in التُرْبَthe earth راغِماًunwillingly
أغضّmore tender منthan الغُصنِthe bough الرطيبِfresh and supple وأنعماand softer
My life for her whom I unwillingly laid in the earth,
With my own hands I buried her in the ground,
More tender and softer than a fresh bough.
Though she was softer than moist branches and more gentle.
وجُدتُand I gave up بهاher لاnot عنout of ملالٍweariness وإنَّماbut rather
غُلبتُI was forcibly deprived عليهاof her مُكْرَهاًcoerced متهضَّماwronged
And I gave her up, not out of weariness; rather,
I was not tired of her, but
I was forcibly deprived of her, coerced and wronged.
I overpowered her against her will in resignation.
ألاAh! ليتَwould that أَنَّاthat we ماnot اصطحبناwe kept company ولمand not نَبِتْwe spent the night
قرينَينِtwo companions فيin خَفْضٍease منof العيشِlife توأَمَاlike twins
Ah, would that we had never been companions, nor spent our nights
Oh, would that we had never accompanied each other,
As a pair, like twins, in a life of ease;
And lived as equal twins in humble life!
ولمand not نُرزَقِwe were granted الوصلَunion الذيwhich عادَturned into فُرْقةًseparation
ولمand not نعهدِwe experienced العُرسَthe wedding الذيwhich صارbecame مأتماa funeral gathering
And never been granted the union that turned to separation,
Would that we were not granted the union which turned to separation,
And never known the wedding that became a funeral.
Nor promised the wedding that became a funeral!
مضتْshe passed away حينwhen لمnot أصغُرْI was young فأجهَلَso I would be ignorant of قَدْرَهاher worth
ولمand not أَعْمُرِI lived الدهرَthe span of life الطويلَlong فأحلُماso I might grow forbearing
She passed away when I was not so young as to be ignorant of her worth,
She left at a time when I did not appreciate her worth,
Nor had I lived long enough to gain forbearance.
And had not lived long enough in this world to be wise.
وعِشتُand I lived صحيحاًhealthy سالماًunharmed بعدafter يومِهاthe day of her death
وحسبيَand enough for me داءًan illness أنthat أصِحَّI am healthy وأسلَمَاand I am unharmed
And I lived on, healthy and unharmed, after the day she died;
After she left I lived healthy and sound,
And it is illness enough for me that I am healthy and unharmed.
And it is enough of an illness for me to recover and be safe.
ولوand if خيَّرونيthey gave me a choice بينbetween كفِّيmy hand وبينَهاand between her
لآثرتُI would have preferred أنthat تبقَىshe live on وأُصبِحَand I become أجذمَاmissing a hand
And if they had given me a choice between my hand and her,
If given a choice between my hands and her,
I would have preferred that she live on and I be left without a hand.
I would prefer that she remain and I become handless.
