    قضَى وطَراً منه السُّرَى والمفاوِزُ

    And one whose home is in al-Ghawr yearns for the protected pasture;

    night journeys and desert wastes have had their fill of him.

    يجدِّدُهُ وَعْدٌ من البَيْنِ ناجِزُ

    He bears traces of the sickness of a love that delays fulfillment;

    a promise of parting, promptly fulfilled, renews it.

    فلا أنا مشكورٌ ولا هو فائِزُ

    I divided the choicest portions of longing between myself and him;

    yet I am not thanked, nor is he successful.

    And a keen-witted man, unscarred by love, whose command

    I accept, provided he does not hint at patience,

    says, while my longing rises from my inmost heart

    toward him, and my secret shows through my eyelids:

    "Take solace: passions are nothing but obstinacy

    grown persistent, and solace is only a matter of innate temperament.

    Do you not see that between me and love

    stands reason's restraint or religion's barrier?"

    So I said to him, "This, which you can manage

    in full, I am powerless to manage even in part."
