As for Time, there is a lesson in its admonition,

were it not for the veil upon a sleeper's eyelids.

Its day and night have warned of their spell's full force,

as you have heard of Harut and Marut.

How little its two turns matter—hardship and blessings!

And heed not what comes and what it bestows.

Nor single out one part of its conduct for loathing,

for nothing in Time is other than loathsome.

If anything could please me, what would please me

in it is one humiliated man's gloating over another.

They spoke while my fortune was poor; yet had they looked,

they would have seen how alike the luckless and the lucky are.

They kept the precepts of ignorance among themselves,

one and all—idols and false gods as many as you please.

And little thought has always led

to worship of what is molded and what is carved.

Have you not seen how Time's fortunes have been reversed?

So water is for the desert lizard, and scorching sand for the whale.

And the smiling mouth of the son of God's Messenger was toyed with

by the sons of Ziyad—his mouth prodded.

    فلا خَلاقَ لما أربَى على القُوتِ

    So be content with what life affords, and find good fortune in it;

for there is no benefit in what exceeds sustenance.

    فما التنافسُ في دُرٍّ وياقوتِ

    Food and the clouds' outpouring have sustained a breath of life;

then why this rivalry for pearls and rubies?

And indeed, for reason—if you could see—there is a lesson

in a single handful from Talut's river.

O you who lament the reopening of the wound reopened

by Time's hand, through one treacherously slain and one struck unawares:

Lift your gaze and see: do you find a refuge

where the vulture seeks food, or where the whale swims?

An alternation between what is gathered and what is scattered,

and a turn between what is joined and what is severed.

And truth has a secret that is not divulged,

because of which people have come to be in a trackless, barren waste.
