رأيتُI saw رِجالاًmen يطلُبونَthey seek مساءَتِيharm to me
رأيتُ رِجالاً يطلُبونَ مساءَتِي
بجهدِهمُwith their utmost effort منwithout غيرِany ذَحْلٍa grudge ولاnor وِتْرِa wrong to avenge
بجهدِهمُ من غيرِ ذَحْلٍ ولا وِتْرِ
I saw men seeking to harm me,
With all their might, without a grudge or a wrong to avenge.
وماand no سبقتْhad previously come منِّيfrom me إليهمto them اساءَةٌwrongdoing
وما سبقتْ منِّي إليهم اساءَةٌ
ولكنّهمْbut they مالُواturned عليَّagainst me معwith الدهرِTime
ولكنّهمْ مالُوا عليَّ مع الدهرِ
Yet I had never done them any wrong,
But they sided with Time against me.
فهلّاthen why not اكتفَوْاthey contented themselves بالدهرِwith Time فيماin what يسوؤُنيdistresses me
فهلّا اكتفَوْا بالدهرِ فيما يسوؤُني
أماis there not فيهِin it ماsomething that يَشفيheals الصدورَthe hearts منof الغمرِrancor
أما فيهِ ما يَشفي الصدورَ من الغمرِ
Why, then, were they not content with the grief Time brings me?
Is there not enough in it to relieve hearts of rancor?
فانْso if أَصطلِحْI make peace والدهرَwith Time أَجعَلْI shall devote مودَّتِيmy affection
فانْ أَصطلِحْ والدهرَ أَجعَلْ مودَّتِي
ويُسريand my prosperity لمنto whoever واسَىconsoled وساعدَand helped فيin العُسْرِhardship
ويُسري لمن واسَى وساعدَ في العُسْرِ
If I make peace with Time, I shall devote my affection
And my prosperity to whoever consoled and helped me in hardship.
