سِواكَ والعُدْمُ مُشْتَقٌّ مِنَ العَدَمِ
She said, “You were denied wealth where it was granted
She said: "You are deprived of wealth from wherever it comes
to others; and ‘destitution’ derives from ‘nonexistence.’”
Except from you, and poverty stems from poverty."
فقُلتُso I said كُفِّيstop فليسfor ... is not العُدْمُdestitution منقَصةًa failing
فقُلتُ كُفِّي فليس العُدْمُ منقَصةً

وإنَّما المرءُ بالأخلاقِ والشِّيَمِ
So I said, “Enough, for destitution is no failing;
So I said: "Enough! For poverty is no disgrace,
a person's worth lies only in morals and character.
Rather man is known for his morals and virtues."

If my circumstances are straitened, my character is not;
"If my state becomes constricted, my ethics do not constrict,
or if money falls short, my aspirations do not fall short because of it.
Nor if money is scarce, are my aspirations shortened."
أمَاdid ... not? عَلِمْتِyou knew وخيرُand the best العِلْمِof knowledge أنفعُهُits most useful

أنَّ الغِنَى غيرُ محسوبٍ مِنَ الكَرَمِ
Have you not learned—and the best knowledge is the most useful—
"Do you not know - and the best knowledge is most useful -
that wealth is not reckoned part of noble character?
That wealth is not considered a virtue?"
أأحسبُam I to regard? العُسْرَhardship جارًاa neighbor لاnot يُفارقُنيleaves me

وضامنُ اليُسْرِ عندي غيرُ متَّهَمِ
Am I to regard hardship as a neighbor who never leaves me,
"Do I reckon difficulty an inseparable companion?
while, in my eyes, the guarantor of ease is beyond suspicion?”
And the guarantor of ease for me is none other than the Almighty."
