حولٌ ووجدي ثابتٌ لا يَريمْ
Since the calamity that befell me, there has passed
Time has passed for the mockery that befell me
A year, yet my grief remains constant and does not depart.
Yet my condition remains unchanged
وكلَّماand whenever قلتُI said عفَاhealed كَلْمُهits wound
وكلَّما قلتُ عفَا كَلْمُه

عاودني منه عِداد السليمْ
And whenever I say, “Its wound has healed,”
And whenever its talk subsides
From it, the recurring pangs of the snake-bitten return to me.
Its counting of the unblemished resumes
يزيدُهadds to it طولُlength of البِلىwearing away جِدَّةًfreshness
يزيدُه طولُ البِلى جِدَّةً
وأَقتلُand the deadliest of الأدواءِailments داءٌan ailment قديمْold
وأَقتلُ الأدواءِ داءٌ قديمْ
The longer it wears away, the fresher it grows;
Length of time only increases its intensity
And the deadliest of ailments is an old one.
And I battle maladies with an old affliction
