O night at the mountain's foot, will you not return once more?

May a downpour of steady rain water your hours.

O my two companions, help me bear my passion

for one who feigned sleep through my night, while I did not sleep.

How can I reach him, when, since he was caught

in the snare, he has been quarry sheltering in the sanctuary?

Would that the one who sheltered him when I caught him

had sheltered me from him when he sought to shed my blood.

A flock of human gazelles set branches upon

a curving sand dune, and veiled roses with crimson twigs.

They appeared unadorned, with no jewels save

beauty ranging from their tresses to their feet.

They begrudged us even the gift of a greeting,

yet in them stinginess is counted generosity.

They left the pebble-casting late at night, shooting

our hearts with arrows sweet in their pain.

They hurled embers at my heart as they cast their pebbles; had they

spoken to us, they would have healed the wound with words.

And that night at the mountain's foot—when the sleeping riders had wound

coils of plaited reins and bridles round their hands—

we passed the night, the east wind courting us in its late hours,

our bed the sand, sprinkled by the hand of steady rains.

Night kept my secret, while the east wind was intent

on spreading what the hand of darkness had almost folded away.

O waft of wind that spent the night among our saddles

at the valley bend, threading among forelocks and tresses,

you stole fragrance and set the talebearers against us.

How lovely you would be, had you not followed their example!

They thought ill of us and doubted, yet we were cleared

of troubling accusations by the coolness of our beds.

A tattletale warned us that dawn was near,

having spent the night stirring strife between wild lote and acacia.

And the raven of parting stayed away from us that night,

so a little sparrow on a hilltop took its place.

I say to my heart, when it shook me with rapture

till I feared for it the onslaught of madness:

O heart, why do you relish suffering, which is never

free of sorrow, open or concealed?

You think the promise of wishes, though they lie,

true, and hope for a dream before you sleep.

    وكيف يَشفيكَ ذو سُقمٍ من السَّقَمِ

    You love the breeze, ailing, without a breath of life;

and how can one who is sick heal you of sickness?

I would give my life for a debtor long delaying payment, whose pledge—

though he unjustly withholds the debt—is the surest of pledges.

I pressed him for payment; he pleaded poverty, so I told him:

One whose mouth is full of pearls is not destitute.

I kept chanting charms over him gently, enchanting him,

until he smiled, revealing fruit both sweet and cool.

His hard heart softened toward me, and he let me have

what I desired; I neither sinned nor was blamed.

And I scooped musk and pearls from his tresses

and his mouth, some scattered, some strung.

And to one asking about my heart's burning ache, I said:

I do not mistrust you with a secret.

    فهو المرارةُ يحلو طعمُها بفَمِ

    The burning ache of love grew sweet, till I found comfort in it;

it is bitterness whose taste turns sweet in the mouth.

I go forth with a gaping, unhealed wound,

bleeding, and a broken union never restored.

Nothing remains of a sweet life now gone and over,

save the lingering pangs of a passion without end.

He wants me to take up love anew after them,

but love is an endowment for our beloveds of old.
