لكfor you الخيرُgoodness قدindeed عوَّدتَنِيyou have accustomed me منكَfrom you عادةًa habit
نشأتُI grew up عليهاupon it منذُsince أوَّلِthe beginning of حاليmy circumstances
May good be yours! You have accustomed me to a habit of yours,
You have always been good to me,
with which I have grown up since my earliest days:
I grew accustomed to this from you since the start of my life.
سكوناًcomfort إِلىin قُربيmy nearness وأُنساًand delight بخدمتيin my service
وحُسنَand favorable اعتقادٍregard فيconcerning تنعُّمِthe ease of باليmy mind
taking comfort in my nearness and delight in my service,
With calmness in my proximity and intimacy in serving me,
and having kindly regard for my peace of mind.
And excellent belief in reveling in my comfort.
وكنتُand I was أرَجِّيhoping أنّthat حالكَyour station ترتقيwould rise
فينموso would grow لهwith it حاليmy fortunes نموَّthe growth of هِلالِa crescent moon
I had hoped that your station would rise,
I hoped that your condition would improve,
and my fortunes would grow with it like a waxing crescent,
So my state grows like the crescent moon's growth.
وأسموand I rise إِلىto نيلِattaining الأمانيwishes واقتضِيand I claim fulfillment
مواعيدَpromises دَهْرٍTime مولَعٍfond بمطالِof delay
and that I would rise to attain my wishes and claim fulfillment of
And I ascend to attain my wishes and procure
the promises of Time, so fond of delay.
The promises of a time obsessed with hopes.
وقدand indeed رابنيhas troubled me منكَfrom you الصدودaloofness وليتَهُand would that it were
And your aloofness has troubled me; would that it were
Your aloofness has disappointed me, if only
aloofness from preoccupation, not from weariness.
It was the aloofness of preoccupation, not of boredom.
فإنso if كانis هذاthis منكَfrom you دأباًa habit تُديمُهُyou maintain it
فإذنَكَthen your permission ليfor me حتَّىso that أزمَّI may bridle جِماليmy camels
So if this is a habit of yours that you keep up,
If this has become your habit that you perpetuate,
then grant me leave, so that I may bridle my camels.
Then your permission to me, until my beauty peaks.
وإلّاand otherwise فعدْthen return ليto me بالجميلwith kindness فقدfor indeed عفَتْhave faded
معالمُlandmarks آماليmy hopes وضاقَand has narrowed مجاليmy scope
Otherwise, show me kindness again, for faded are
Else return my favor, for the features of
the landmarks of my hopes, and my scope has narrowed.
My hopes have chastened and my scope narrowed.
فمثليَfor one like me لاnot يرضَىaccepts مُقَاماًa stay بذلةٍin humiliation
وصبراًand patience علىwith جاهٍstanding لديكَwith you مُدَالِoverturned
For one like me will not accept a stay in humiliation,
One like me is not content with staying in humiliation,
nor patiently endure a reversal of standing with you.
And patience over status with you extended.
ومثلُكَand one like you لاnot يرضَىis content بتضييعِwith squandering خدمتيmy service
وتخييبand dashing آمالٍhopes لديهِin him طِوالِfar-reaching
And one like you will not accept the squandering of my service,
And one like you is not content with wasting my service,
or the dashing of the far-reaching hopes placed in him.
And failing hopes with him prolonged.
