ساريةٌ ذاتُ عبوسٍ برقُهَا
يَضْحَكُlaughs والأجفانُand the eyelids منهاof her تَهمِلُstream with tears
يَضْحَكُ والأجفانُ منها تَهمِلُ
A frowning night-cloud, whose lightning
A lightning bolt whose gloom is smiling
laughs while her eyelids stream with tears,
While its eyelids are negligent
كَحُلَّةٍlike a robe دكناءَdusky فيalong حاشيةٍa hem
كَحُلَّةٍ دكناءَ في حاشيةٍ
منهاof it طِرازٌan embroidered band ذهبٌgold مسلسلُlinked like a chain
منها طِرازٌ ذهبٌ مسلسلُ
like a dusky robe, along whose hem
Like a dark kohl in a margin
runs a chain-linked band of gold,
With a threaded golden brocade
غنيّةٍrich منin ذهبgold ولؤلؤٍand pearls
غنيّةٍ من ذهب ولؤلؤٍ
قَطْرٌrain يصوبُpours down ووميضٌand a flash يُشعَلُis kindled
قَطْرٌ يصوبُ ووميضٌ يُشعَلُ
rich in gold and pearls:
A necklace of gold and pearls
rain pours down, and a flash is kindled.
A dripping and a flashing blaze
إِذاwhen ونتْfaltered عِشارُهاher ten-month-pregnant she-camels صاحَshouted بهاat them
إِذا ونتْ عِشارُها صاحَ بها
قاصفُa crashing peal رعدٍof thunder وحَدَتْهاand sang them onward الشمألُthe north wind
قاصفُ رعدٍ وحَدَتْها الشمألُ
When her pregnant she-camels falter, they are shouted at
When its lovers moaned, it roared
by crashing thunder, and the north wind sings them onward.
With cracking thunder and blinking lightning
