خبَتْdied down نارُthe fire of نفسيmy soul باشتعالِwith the blazing of مفارقيmy hair's partings
وأظلمَand grew dark عُمريmy life إذwhen أضاءَshone شِهابُهاtheir flame
The fire of my soul died down as my hair's partings blazed;
My soul's fire died down when we parted
And my life grew dark when their flame shone.
And my life darkened when its flames went out
فياso, O بُومةًowl قدalready عشَّشتْnested فوقatop هامتيmy head
علىin الرغمspite منيof me حينwhen طارَflew away غُرابُهاits crow
So, O owl that has nested atop my head,
Oh little owl that nested on my forehead
Against my will, when its crow flew away,
Despite me when its raven flew away
رأيتِyou saw خرابَthe ruin of العُمْرِlife منيin me فزُرْتِنيso you visited me
ومأواكِand your abode منamong كلِّall الديارِdwellings خَرابُهاtheir ruins
You saw life's ruin in me, and so you visited me;
You saw my life lying in ruins so you visited me
And of all dwellings, their ruins are your home.
While your home is in every desolate place
