وفاقُ الأقربينَ غِنىً وعِزٌّ

وفاقُ الأقربينَ غِنىً وعِزٌّ

وخلفُهُمُ المذلَّةُ والعُرامُ

وخلفُهُمُ المذلَّةُ والعُرامُ

The concord of close kin is wealth and might;

Concord among close kin is wealth and honor;

their discord is abasement and fierce strife.

And their discord is humiliation and strife.

متى ما تَلْقَ دهْرَكَ وهو حربٌ

متى ما تَلْقَ دهْرَكَ وهو حربٌ

فإِن أخاك درعُكَ والحُسَامُ

فإِن أخاك درعُكَ والحُسَامُ

Whenever you meet Fate and find it at war,

Whenever you face your times and they are hostile,

your brother is your shield and keen-edged sword.

Then surely your brother is your shield and keen sword.

يُضامُ المرءُ منفرداً وحيداً

يُضامُ المرءُ منفرداً وحيداً

وينصُرهُ أخوهُ ولا يُضَامُ

وينصُرهُ أخوهُ ولا يُضَامُ

A man, isolated and alone, is wronged;

A man is wronged when isolated and alone;

his brother comes to his aid, and he is wronged no more.

His brother aids him, and he is not wronged.

كذاك القِدْحُ يُكْسَرُ وهو فَرْدٌ

كذاك القِدْحُ يُكْسَرُ وهو فَرْدٌ

ويُشفَعُ بالقِداحِ فلا يُرامُ

ويُشفَعُ بالقِداحِ فلا يُرامُ

Likewise, an arrow-shaft is broken while alone,

Likewise, an arrow shaft is broken when alone;

yet, joined with other shafts, it cannot be assailed.

But joined with other shafts, it cannot be assailed.
