صحَا عن فؤادي ظِلُّ كُلِّ عَلاقَةٍ

صحَا عن فؤادي ظِلُّ كُلِّ عَلاقَةٍ

وظِلُّ الهَوى النجديِّ لا يتقلَّصُ

وظِلُّ الهَوى النجديِّ لا يتقلَّصُ

The shadow of every attachment has lifted from my heart,

The shadow of every relationship has disappeared from my heart,

yet the shadow of Najdi love does not recede.

And the shadow of my Najdi love does not shrink.

هوىً ليس يُسْلِي القربُ عنه ولا النَّوَى

هوىً ليس يُسْلِي القربُ عنه ولا النَّوَى

ولا هو في الحالينِ يصفُو ويَخْلُصُ

ولا هو في الحالينِ يصفُو ويَخْلُصُ

A love that neither nearness nor separation makes me forget,

A love that neither nearness relieves, nor distance,

nor does it become serene and pure in either state.

And it is purified in neither state.

ففي البعدِ قلبٌ بالفِراقِ مُعَذَّبٌ

ففي البعدِ قلبٌ بالفِراقِ مُعَذَّبٌ

وفي القُربِ عيشٌ بالوُشاةِ مُنَغّصُ

وفي القُربِ عيشٌ بالوُشاةِ مُنَغّصُ

For in distance, a heart is tormented by separation,

In separation, a heart tortured by parting,

and in nearness, life is embittered by slanderers.

And in nearness, a life embittered by slanderers.

وإنَّ خَلاصاً كنت أرجوهُ بُرْهَةً

وإنَّ خَلاصاً كنت أرجوهُ بُرْهَةً

وكان يزيدُ الأمر فيه وينقُصُ

وكان يزيدُ الأمر فيه وينقُصُ

And as for a release I had hoped for a while—

For a while I hoped for salvation,

while the matter concerning it would wax and wane—

But the situation only grew worse.

قطعتُ رجائِي عنه إذْ قال صاحبِي

قطعتُ رجائِي عنه إذْ قال صاحبِي

رَمِيُّ العيونِ النُّجْلِ لا يتخلّصُ

رَمِيُّ العيونِ النُّجْلِ لا يتخلّصُ

I gave up hope of it when my companion said:

I gave up hope when my friend said,

"One struck by wide eyes cannot escape."

The caster of tender glances will not be set free.
