ما فارق الأرض فهو طيارُ

وأمه في مجسّها حجر

لها جنى طيّب وأزهارُ

And its mother is stone to the touch;

hers are sweet fruit and flowers.

قشورها أفسدت طبائعها

فهو بغير القشور يختارُ

Her husks have corrupted her natural properties,

so it is chosen without the husks.

خزائن الله في دواخلها

تخرج من جوفها وتمتارُ

God's treasures lie within her depths;

they emerge from her belly and are gathered as provisions.

مطروحة في الطريق هينة

ليس لها في النفوس مقدارُ

ليس لها في النفوس مقدارُ

Cast upon the road, held cheap,

she has no worth in people's minds.

وهي إذا أحكمت طبائعها

وهي إذا أحكمت طبائعها

ملك عزيز الوجود جبارُ

ملك عزيز الوجود جبارُ

And when her natural properties are perfected,

she is a king, rare to find and mighty.

وسرها الظاهر يخفى كما

وسرها الظاهر يخفى كما

قد اختفت في العيون أنوارُ

قد اختفت في العيون أنوارُ

And her manifest secret lies hidden, just as

lights lie concealed within the eyes.
