الأرض أمٌ برةٌ

فيها طبائع أربع

The earth is a kindly mother;

The earth is a compassionate mother

within her are four natures.

In her there are four natures

فيها العقاقيرُ التي

فيها العقاقيرُ التي

صارت تضرّ وتنفعُ

صارت تضرّ وتنفعُ

Within her are the drugs that

In her there are remedies that

have come to harm and benefit.

Have become harmful and beneficial

ومنابع القطران وال

ومنابع القطران وال

كبريت منها تنبعُ

كبريت منها تنبعُ

And springs of tar and

And sources of tar and

sulfur well up from her.

Sulphur spring from her

لما أصابت وجهها

لما أصابت وجهها

شمسٌ تلوح وتسفعُ

شمسٌ تلوح وتسفعُ

When her face was struck

When the blazing sun struck her face

by a sun that shone and scorched,

She was scorched and became arid

كُرِيَت وأصلحها ميا

كُرِيَت وأصلحها ميا

ه طاب منها المكرعُ

ه طاب منها المكرعُ

she was dug into, and waters restored her;

Then rain restored her, waters

her drinking place grew sweet.

Sweetly irrigated her barrenness

كلّ النبات بمائها

كلّ النبات بمائها

يروى ومنها يشبعُ

يروى ومنها يشبعُ

All plants, with her water,

All vegetation is watered by her

have their thirst quenched and are nourished by her.

Satiated and nurtured by her

وغرائب النبت الخبي

وغرائب النبت الخبي

ثة عن ثراها تنزع

ثة عن ثراها تنزع

And strange kinds of noxious plants

And wonders of lush plants

are plucked from her soil.

Are drawn from her fertile soil

إن زاد فيها اللطف فال

إن زاد فيها اللطف فال

حيوان منها يطبعُ

حيوان منها يطبعُ

If subtlety increases within her, then

If her soil is enriched, animals

animal life is formed from her.

Flourish and breed in her

وأداتنا هي لطفها

وأداتنا هي لطفها

فالنطق فيها يودع

فالنطق فيها يودع

And our instrument is her subtle essence;

And she is the substance of our tools

so speech is lodged within her.

So speech in her is embedded

صلحت لحمل نفوسنا

صلحت لحمل نفوسنا

فالنور منها يسطعُ

فالنور منها يسطعُ

She became fit to bear our souls,

She was made fit to carry our souls

and so light shines forth from her.

So light emanates and shines from her

قد حلّ فيها قوة

قد حلّ فيها قوة

أضحت تقول وتسمع

أضحت تقول وتسمع

A power has settled within her;

Power came to settle in her

she has come to speak and hear.

She began to speak and listen

وهي المقر لسرنا ال

وهي المقر لسرنا ال

مكتوم والمستودعُ

مكتوم والمستودعُ

And she is the abode of our secret,

She is the dwelling of our hidden secrets

concealed, and its repository.

Our treasured place of storage

فإذا صغت لك فضه

فإذا صغت لك فضه

فالتبر فيها يزرعُ

فالتبر فيها يزرعُ

So if you fashion silver for yourself,

So if you tend to her wounds

then raw gold is sown within her.

Crops will grow and multiply in her

والعقد منها محكم

والعقد منها محكم

والصبغ فيها مشبعُ

والصبغ فيها مشبعُ

And the binding she yields is firm,

And sturdy structures will be built on her

and the dye within her is saturated.

Vibrant dye will color her
