بالأمسِ تحتَ رِضاهُمُ سُخْطُ
Indeed, those whose words pleased you
Lovers' words once pleased me
yesterday harbor displeasure beneath their favor.
Yesterday under their contentment was my discontent
لماwhen صفَاbecame unchallenged ملكُdominion الجمالِof beauty لهمْfor them
لما صفَا ملكُ الجمالِ لهمْ
تاهواthey acted haughtily علىover العُشَّاقِthe lovers واشتطُّواand went too far
تاهوا على العُشَّاقِ واشتطُّوا
When beauty's dominion became theirs alone,
When the beauty of his kingdom was unveiled to them
they lorded it over lovers and went too far.
They went astray with passion and were excessive
همّواthey contemplated ببَيْنٍparting فاسْتُطيرَso was thrown into panic لهbecause of it

قلبي فكيفَ يكونُ إِن شَطُّوا
They contemplated parting; at this, terror seized
They intended separation so my heart took flight
my heart—how would it fare if they went far away?
How could it be if they went too far

And a beauty, graceful in movement—if she walks in trailing robes
The beauty in her movements, if she sways
through the camp, her earring quarrels with her necklace.
In the neighborhood, her earrings excite

Her mantles betrayed her body, and it showed—
The lote-tree swayed with her body appearing
and no mantle can conceal the sun.
While the sun cannot conceal it at all

The east wind opened, upon the expanse of her cheek,
The morning breeze opened in her cheek's garden
a rose whose beauty is doubled by plucking.
A rose whose beauty is doubled by picking

She said, as their laden camels turned away,
She said, as their resolves turned away
while the pale camels trod upon her eyelids:
With sleepiness over her eyelids treading

Fresh youth used to bring us together,
Youthful vigor once gathered us
then it passed, and flecks of gray hair broke our union.
Then it passed and dispersed our union completely

Loved ones and youth proved faithless together,
The loved ones and youth together betrayed
so it is as though we had never been companions.
As if we never accompanied one another at all

I have resorted to composure in my old age

When the comb distressed me intensely
