O my soul, if calamity befalls you, beware

Of cowering or crying out at the pain of toil.

How many a pitch-black, gloomy cloud has trailed its fringes,

Then cleared away without pouring rain or doing harm.

And he whose shoulders bow before the world

Will not escape toil in it, nor sickness.

His spear-shaft bends, and his ardor’s fire grows dim,

After he was once supple, with bones full of marrow.
