فعفَّىso effaced علىupon إحسانهنَّtheir kindness ذنوبُهاtheir misdeeds
The days grew kind, then turned hostile;
so their misdeeds effaced their kindness.

Their face had been cheerful, but then they scowled,
and their frowning altered that cheer upon it.

And the nights' greatest fault is their changing
swiftly, though their faults are many.
أُعلّلُI console نفسيmyself بالأمانيّwith hopes ضَلَّةًin folly
وأحلَىand the sweetest أمانِيِّhopes النفوسِof souls كَذوبُهاthe most deceitful of them
I console myself with hopes, in folly;
and the sweetest hopes of souls are the most deceitful.

Hopes—if they are false, their falsehood is sweet;
and if they come true one day, their sweetness doubles.
