My two friends, is there anyone to comfort or heal

A heart afflicted with a recurring sickness of love?

And do you two hope for recovery from what it harbors?

For, by the House of God, I utterly despair of it.

A passion that neither nearness nor separation can overcome,

Nor is it effaced by the long passage of time.

It stole where the mind cannot discern its whereabouts,

Nor can fleeting thoughts ever find their way to it.

Whenever I say, “Now is the time to forget,” back come

Aftereffects of its ailments and lingering traces.

So, O two sarh trees of Wadi al-‘Aqiq, may you both be watered—

Though you have not shaded me—by the rumbling clouds.
