ومفردٍ بالحُسْنِ أفردْتُهُ

ومفردٍ بالحُسْنِ أفردْتُهُ

بالحُبِّ لمَّا قَلَّ عُشَّاقُه

بالحُبِّ لمَّا قَلَّ عُشَّاقُه

And I singled out one peerless in beauty

Alone in beauty I have singled him out

for love, when his lovers grew few.

With love, though few his lovers are about

حيَّيتُه إذ نامَ عُذَّالُه

حيَّيتُه إذ نامَ عُذَّالُه

وطابَ للعُشَّاقِ أخلاقُه

وطابَ للعُشَّاقِ أخلاقُه

I greeted him when his reproachers slept,

I greeted him, while slumber bound his foes

and his manners grew pleasing to lovers.

His noble ways the lovers' hearts endow

وغضَّ من نخوتِه علمُهُ

وغضَّ من نخوتِه علمُهُ

بأنني وحديَ مُشتاقُه

بأنني وحديَ مُشتاقُه

And his pride was diminished by his knowledge

His banner of disdain he lowers now

that I alone yearned for him.

For I alone desired him, I avow
